2.  UNDERSTANDING BIOLOGICAL CLOCK

Why do certain types of flowers open/ close at particular times of the day? Why some people are more active in the morning while others prefer to work late in the night? Why do we feel hungry at a particular time in a day? How do plants sprout new leaves at particular time of the year? How do marine turtles know when to come on shore to lay eggs? How do migratory birds know an appropriate time to start migration? Why do humans get jet lagged after inter-continental travel? The answer to all these random questions is one phenomenon- the “biological clocks”.

3. LATEST TREND IN CHRONOBIOLOGY RESEARCH

Morningness-eveningness and caffeine consumption: A largescale path-analysis study
It is still not clear how chronotype influences caffeine consumption (CC) and caffeine use disorder (CUD). The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between chronotype, CC, CUD, and wellbeing. Participants of an online survey in Hungary (N = 2259) answered the CUD Questionnaire, Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire and the WHO-5 Well-Being Index. The results indicate that the carrier beverages of the chemical compound of caffeine should be examined separately. Energy drink use can be accompanied by more unfavorable consequences, especially for evening-types, while tea consumption, which was associated with morningness, had more favorable consequences, like higher wellbeing.

4. CHRONOBIOLOGY AND MODERN MEDICINE
Gut microbiota-circadian clock axis - a novel and crucial mechanism for deciphering metabolic memory

According to the latest data from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), there are approximately 425 million adults with diabetes mellitus (DM) worldwide in 2017. By 2045, this number is expected to increase to 629 million. What is the best way to identify groups that are at high risk of developing diabetes early? How can an earlier intervention be carried out? How can treatment effectiveness be improved? These are key issues in the prevention and treatment of metabolic diseases such as DM.

8. CHRONOBIOLOGY FOR PROFESSIONALS

Is Artificial Daytime Light Making You Sleepy?
There was a time when most humans spent their days in the sun. In modern times, however, most of us work indoors under artificial lighting. How is this affecting our health and energy levels? A new study looks closely at how natural daytime light of different wavelengths affects us differently from indoor light.

Humans evolved to have circadian rhythms that mirror the rhythms of the sun. The presence (or absence) of sunlight tells our brains when it is time to wake and sleep as well as serving as a cue for a variety of other biological processes.

10. TUNE YOUR CLOCK – GAMES / MEDITATION TECHNIQUES
Like deep sleep, observing oneself is also the best method for tuning of your clock. Unfortunately, we are so much engrossed into daily life, we forgot to take a pause and look as if we are looking into the mirror. Meditation techniques are the possible way for witnessing yourself. You may practice meditation either for spiritual experiences or for mundane physical benefits, the technique will remain the same.

11. BOOK REVIEW

Chronobiology: Biological Timekeeping
JAY C. DUNLAP, JENNIFER J. LOROS, AND PATRICIA J. DECOURSEY, EDS. Sinauer Associates, Inc., Sunderland, Massachusetts, 2003, 382 p., 278 illustrations. (ISBN 0-87893-149-X $77.95).
Chronobiology is a fascinating field that deals with biological rhythms from their molecular and cellular basis to their impact on the behavior and physiology of whole organisms. For many years, this field has deserved a comprehensive text which examines the impressive progress in the understanding of the timekeeping mechanisms.

2.  CIRCADIAN BIOLOGY OF NON-PHOTOSYNTHETIC BACTERIA

Circadian clocks are molecular programs that impart temporal organization.  These pervasive biological systems are responsible for distinct and characteristic patterns of daily activities that are observed throughout the nature. The circadian clocks have a broad influence upon cells which can be evidenced by molecular rhythms in RNA abundance, protein modification, and metabolic pathways modification.

Although circadian clocks are seemingly ubiquitous, they have rarely been described in non-photosynthetic prokaryotes. The potential existence and nature of circadian systems in this group of organisms was reviewed by Soriano et al.

RhythmicAlly: Your R and Shiny-Based Open-Source Ally for the Analysis of Biological Rhythms.

Research on circadian rhythms often requires researchers to estimate period, robustness/power, and phase of the rhythm. These are important to estimate, owing to the fact that they act as readouts of different features of the underlying clock. The commonly used tools, to this end, suffer from being very expensive, having very limited interactivity, being very cumbersome to use, or a combination of these. As a step toward remedying the inaccessibility to users who may not be able to afford them and to ease the analysis of biological time-series data, we have written RhythmicAlly, an open-source program using R and Shiny.

4.  CHRONOBIOLOGY IN AYURVED – A PERSPECTIVE
Chronotype and Prakriti type has the obvious correlation. Though chronotype is validated and standardized by multiple controlled studies, Prakriti type is yet to get standardized despite having multiple online questionnaires. Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), an apex organization for research in Ayurved has devised standard operating procedures for Prakriti validation.  Details can be accessed in the paper referred below.

6. CHRONOBIOLOGY FOR STUDENTS

Screen Time and Insomnia: What it means for Teens
For teenagers, sleep plays a critical role in staying healthy, feeling happy, maintaining good grades, and doing well in sports. But sleep doesn’t come easily for some teens. For those who struggle, it’s important to look at their electronic use.

For university students – Career in Chronobiology

The Cao Lab is interested in molecular signaling mechanisms that orchestrate daily rhythms in our brain, and how their dysregulation contributes to various neurological and psychiatric diseases with interests in the role of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling and mechanisms that control mRNA translation in the circadian clock.

7. CHRONOBIOLOGY FOR PROFESSIONALS

Skipping a few meals with intermittent fasting may help people avoid cancer, diabetes, and heart disease

·         Intermittent fasting has many forms, but usually involves letting the gut rest without food for at least several hours a day.

·         People around the world have known intuitively for centuries that some sporadic intermittent fasting is good for the body.

·    Scientists now have some of the first laboratory evidence about why fasting can be beneficial: it temporarily shuts off the monocyte cells in our bodies that cause inflammation.

·         Dr. Miriam Merad, lead author of a new fasting study, said two meals a day may be ideal for human health.
