Prakriti type analysis

Vata, Pitta and Kapha are three important body constituents called Doshas in Ayurveda. Each of them has a very specific set of functional roles to play in the body.

Out of three Doshas, the dominant Dosha at the time of conception determines our Prakriti. This is our constitution which we are born with and it never varies. It is like our thumbprint. It is quite rare that Vata, Pitta and Kapha are equally pronounced in a human being, a state that is called as Balanced Tri-Dosha, which forms the foundation of health, fitness, and wellbeing par excellence.

Most people are dominant in any two of the Doshas. Various Dosha proportions determine one’s physiological and personality traits as well as general likes and dislikes. Here are the three Doshas, and the characteristics associated with each of them.

I) Vata Dosha (Ether + Wind)
Vata is the kinetic energy that controls bodily functions associated with motion, including blood circulation, breathing, blinking, and heartbeat. In balance condition Vata is responsible for creativity and vitality but when it goes out of balance it creates fear and anxiety.

II) Pitta Dosha (Fire + Water)
Pitta is the heat energy that controls metabolic activities of the body such as digestion, absorption, assimilation and regulates body temperature. In balance state Pitta gives contentment and intelligence. When it goes out of balance it creates excessive anger and inflammatory conditions.

III) Kapha Dosha (Earth + Water)
Kapha is the cold energy that controls growth in the body. It also supplies nourishment to all body parts, moisturizes the skin and maintains the immune system. In balance state it is responsible for love and forgiveness but when it is out of balance it can lead to insecurity and envy.

Vikriti is present condition of Tri-dosha. When the Doshas are out of balance, they can create various diseases disturbing the health. Once we know Vikriti, we can use food, herbs, diet and lifestyle changes to align our condition (Vikriti) with our constitution (Prakriti). When they are aligned, we experience optimal health and peace in life.

Ayurveda focuses on providing specific advice and guidance on how to maintain physical and emotional health. We are suggesting the set of personalized recommendations designed to support you in your journey towards optimal health.

Following link has the Prakriti questionnaire which you can submit to us for getting the detailed report.

1. WHAT IS NEW IN THIS MONTH

We are trying to give wide publicity to courses initiated by Institute of Chronobiology education and research (ICER). In that effort, recently the website was launched. Most of the information on the site is compiled by Ms. Ankita Galinde, a project intern at ICER. Your feedback and comments are welcome. We will initiate online course soon through this platform. Educational resources will be updated regularly. Do visit the site at following link. https://chronolab.wordpress.com/

2.  UNDERSTANDING BIOLOGICAL CLOCK

Entrainment and Phase relationship of rhythm

In the natural world around us we mostly see rhythmic behaviours that are in tune with environmental time cues such as sunrise/ sunset, high tide/ low tide, high/ low temperatures. These rhythms are said to be in an “entrained state” already. Entrainment is adjusting the internal periodicity with the period of environmental time cue. Historically two different mechanisms- parametric and non-parametric entrainment- were proposed by Jurgen Aschoff and Colin Pittendrigh, respectively to explain how entrainment can be achieved.

Rhythmicity matters: Circadian and ultradian patterns of HPA axis activity

Oscillations are a fundamental feature of neural and endocrine systems. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dynamically controls corticosteroid secretion in basal conditions and in response to stress. Across the 24-h day, HPA axis activity oscillates with both an ultradian and circadian rhythm.

4. CHRONOBIOLOGY AND MODERN MEDICINE
Diet and rhythmicity in gut microbes

The 24/7 lifestyles of shift work, early morning starts, delayed bedtimes, jet lag, and late night eating may cause circadian disruption, as our internal clocks may fail to keep pace with the conflicting information of the external light/dark cycle and our behaviour in an optimal way. This misalignment of the rhythms that control our energy metabolism increases the risks of weight gain and metabolic syndrome, including type 2 diabetes mellitus. Interestingly, an imbalance in our intestinal microbiota is also associated with obesity and diabetes.

7. CHRONOBIOLOGY FOR STUDENTS

For school children – Melatonin levels and usage of mobile phones
Blue light our phones and iPads give off messes with our melatonin levels. But the effect is even worse for kids and teenagers.

For university students – Career in Chronobiology

Cohen Laboratory at California State University, Los Angeles, USA

We seek to understand the molecular mechanisms by which the cyanobacterial circadian clock functions in the context of the three-dimensional cell.

8. CHRONOBIOLOGY FOR PROFESSIONALS
Monthly rhythm of reproductive cycle in females is extremely important as we all know. However, new research suggests that daily, or circadian, rhythms also are important in helping to support female health and fertility. Several new studies have shed light on this topic, suggesting that circadian clocks in the ovary may be more important to fertility and reproduction than previously known.

9. CHRONOPRAKRITI DIET PLAN
Chronobiologists prescribes ‘Chronodiet’.Ayurvedic practitioners insists that the diet must be personalized based on the prakriti and season. We bring the best of both the world to you in the form of ChronoPrakriti diet.
Recipes of the month –
Vegetable Pongal / South Indian style khichadi

10. TUNE YOUR CLOCK – GAMES / MEDITATION TECHNIQUES
Like deep sleep, observing oneself is also the best method for tuning of your clock. Unfortunately, we are so much engrossed into daily life, we forgot to take a pause and look as if we are looking into the mirror. Meditation techniques are the possible way for witnessing yourself. You may practice meditation either for spiritual experiences or for mundane physical benefits, the technique will remain the same.

WITH YOUR ENTIRE CONSCIOUSNESS IN THE VERY START OF DESIRE, OF KNOWING, KNOW

2.  UNDERSTANDING BIOLOGICAL CLOCK

Zeitgeber / time cues and Free-running period
Most biological phenomena (behaviours, metabolic processes) in a variety of organisms follow rhythmic patterns such as opening and closing of flowers, time of feeding and sleep-wake patterns of most animals. The basic question is how do organisms know what is an appropriate time for a particular behaviour like feeding or waking or producing certain enzymes/ hormones? Are there any external environmental cues that help organisms schedule there activities? Or there are internal mechanisms for time keeping that regulate these rhythmic phenomena?

Simple and Quick Visualization of Periodical Data Using Microsoft Excel
Actograms are well-established methods used for visualizing periodic activity of animals in chronobiological research. They help in the understanding of the overall characteristics of rhythms and are instrumental in defining the direction of subsequent detailed analysis. Although there exists specialized software for creating actograms, new users such as students and researchers from other fields often find it inconvenient to use. In this study, we demonstrate a fast and easy method to create actograms using Microsoft Excel.
