1. WHAT IS NEW IN THIS MONTH

We are trying to give wide publicity to courses initiated by Institute of Chronobiology education and research (ICER). In that effort, recently the website was launched. Most of the information on the site is compiled by Ms. Ankita Galinde, a project intern at ICER. Your feedback and comments are welcome. We will initiate online course soon through this platform. Educational resources will be updated regularly. Do visit the site at following link. https://chronolab.wordpress.com/

2.  UNDERSTANDING BIOLOGICAL CLOCK

Entrainment and Phase relationship of rhythm

In the natural world around us we mostly see rhythmic behaviours that are in tune with environmental time cues such as sunrise/ sunset, high tide/ low tide, high/ low temperatures. These rhythms are said to be in an “entrained state” already. Entrainment is adjusting the internal periodicity with the period of environmental time cue. Historically two different mechanisms- parametric and non-parametric entrainment- were proposed by Jurgen Aschoff and Colin Pittendrigh, respectively to explain how entrainment can be achieved.

Rhythmicity matters: Circadian and ultradian patterns of HPA axis activity

Oscillations are a fundamental feature of neural and endocrine systems. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dynamically controls corticosteroid secretion in basal conditions and in response to stress. Across the 24-h day, HPA axis activity oscillates with both an ultradian and circadian rhythm.

4. CHRONOBIOLOGY AND MODERN MEDICINE
Diet and rhythmicity in gut microbes

The 24/7 lifestyles of shift work, early morning starts, delayed bedtimes, jet lag, and late night eating may cause circadian disruption, as our internal clocks may fail to keep pace with the conflicting information of the external light/dark cycle and our behaviour in an optimal way. This misalignment of the rhythms that control our energy metabolism increases the risks of weight gain and metabolic syndrome, including type 2 diabetes mellitus. Interestingly, an imbalance in our intestinal microbiota is also associated with obesity and diabetes.

6. SITE OF THE MONTH

Institute of Chronobiology Education and Research (ICER) was formally initiated at Pune, Maharashtra in June 2016 with the purpose of chronobiology education, research and popularization.

7. CHRONOBIOLOGY FOR STUDENTS

For school children – Melatonin levels and usage of mobile phones
Blue light our phones and iPads give off messes with our melatonin levels. But the effect is even worse for kids and teenagers.

For university students – Career in Chronobiology

Cohen Laboratory at California State University, Los Angeles, USA

We seek to understand the molecular mechanisms by which the cyanobacterial circadian clock functions in the context of the three-dimensional cell.

8. CHRONOBIOLOGY FOR PROFESSIONALS
Monthly rhythm of reproductive cycle in females is extremely important as we all know. However, new research suggests that daily, or circadian, rhythms also are important in helping to support female health and fertility. Several new studies have shed light on this topic, suggesting that circadian clocks in the ovary may be more important to fertility and reproduction than previously known.

9. CHRONOPRAKRITI DIET PLAN
Chronobiologists prescribes ‘Chronodiet’.Ayurvedic practitioners insists that the diet must be personalized based on the prakriti and season. We bring the best of both the world to you in the form of ChronoPrakriti diet.
Recipes of the month –
Vegetable Pongal / South Indian style khichadi

10. TUNE YOUR CLOCK – GAMES / MEDITATION TECHNIQUES
Like deep sleep, observing oneself is also the best method for tuning of your clock. Unfortunately, we are so much engrossed into daily life, we forgot to take a pause and look as if we are looking into the mirror. Meditation techniques are the possible way for witnessing yourself. You may practice meditation either for spiritual experiences or for mundane physical benefits, the technique will remain the same.

WITH YOUR ENTIRE CONSCIOUSNESS IN THE VERY START OF DESIRE, OF KNOWING, KNOW

11. BOOK REVIEW

Circadian Rhythms: Methods & Protocols
Ezio Rosato ED. Humana Press, Totowa, New Jersey  2007, ISBN 978-1-58829-417-3

The aim of Circadian Rhythms: Methods and Protocols has been to provide a resource that can be adopted by several types of users such as seasoned chronobiologist to a novice to the field. This task has been achieved by collecting a full range of methods, many provided by leading experts in the field, that should satisfy the needs of the audience of varied background, by illustrating procedures that have been recently introduced in circadian studies, and by presenting, for many basic techniques, variations to take into account the peculiarities of different model systems.
